Prof. Dr. med. Paul Bernhard Henrich

Professor of ophthalmology, USI

Specialist in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery,  FMH

 

Prof. Henrich studied medicine in Bonn, Philadelphia and Munich and trained as a specialist in ophthalmology in Munich. From the beginning of his training he has been particularly interested in the treatment of retinal diseases. He specialized in vitreoretinal ophthalmic surgery at the Technical University of Munich, and in anterior segment surgery at the General Hospital of Linz / Austria, the DiagLaser Clinic in Porto Alegre / Brazil and the Hospital da Visão in Novo Hamburgo / Brazil. From 2007 to 2014 he was a fellow in the vitreoretinal department at the Basel University Hospital, where he was able to perfect vitreoretinal surgical techniques. In particular, he worked on the vitreoretinal surgery on-call team. During this period he also devoted himself to research and teaching. He followed the "Scientific Qualification" procedure and was appointed as a private lecturer at the University of Basel ("Venia legendi"). Since the beginning of 2013 he has been working as an ophthalmologist and ophthalmic surgeon in Lugano. Since 2014 he has also been attending physician and chief of the vitreoretinal surgery department of the cantonal hospital of Winterthur / ZH. In June 2019 he was appointed private lecturer and in June 2020 Full Professor of the University of Italian Switzerland (USI), Lugano.

Dr. Roberta Foglia
Specialist in ophthalmology

 

Dr. Foglia was born in Lugano where she attended elementary school and high school. She studied medicine at the University of Insubria in Varese and specialized in Ophthalmology in Switzerland working in the Ophthalmology department of the Italian Hospital in Lugano and then moving to St. Gallen to complete her specialization. The stay in St. Gallen lasted more than 4 years. She worked at the Augenklinik of the Kantonsspital St. Gallen and at the Augenzentrum in Wil.

In 2014 she successfully passed the FEBO exam in Paris ("European Board of Ophthalmology") and obtained the title of FMH specialist in Ophthalmology.

Since 2016 she has been working at the COB clinic in Bellinzona, where she still carries out consultations on Tuesdays.

 

She also worked in the ophthalmological office of Prof. Henrich at the Avanti Center in Pazzallo, where she was able to deepen her knowledge in the field of medical retina.

She currently performs general ophthalmology consultations with a particular interest in diseases of the retina and macula.

Dr. med. Andrea Consigli

Dr. Consigli studied at the Faculty of  Medicine  and Surgery from the University of Insubria in Varese, graduating in 2010 with the thesis New Developments in Vitreoretinal Surgery.

Subsequently he worked as an Assistant Doctor in the Ophthalmology department of the Italian Hospital of Lugano and in the General Surgery and Emergency Department of the Civic Hospital of Lugano. He completed his specialization course by working,  from 2014 to 2016, in Geneva at les HCUGE - Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève.

He then obtained the Specialist Diploma in Ophthalmology in Paris from the European Board of Ophthalmology, with subsequent recognition of the Swiss FMH Specialization Diploma in Bern in February 2017.

In the same year he returned to Ticino becoming Chief Resident at the Ophthalmology Service of the Italian Hospita Luganol. In November 2021, after passing the specialization exam in Bern, he obtained the FMH Diploma as a Specialist in Ophthalmosurgery.

Since April 2022 he has also been a Clinical teacher at the University of Italian Switzerland.

From September 2022 to February 2023 he moved to France, to the Clinique Honoré-Cave in Montauban – Occitanie, for a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery.

He then returned as Chief Hospital Doctor from March 2023 until February 2024 at the Ophthalmology Service of the Italian Hospital where he mainly dealt with cataract surgery and medical and surgical retina, as well as the training of new doctors.

From March 2024 he joined the Oftacentro Team for general consultations, emergencies and surgical activities.

Dr. med. Verena Sattinger
FMH ophthalmology

Dr. Verena Sattinger has been active in Lugano since 2004, gaining almost twenty years of experience in the private and public sector in Lugano and Bern.

Born in Osnabrück in north-west Germany, she graduated from the Christliches Jugenddorf Deutschland high school and the Morse High School in Maine, USA.

She later studied medicine at the University of Hansestadt Rostock, Tennessee (USA) and Bari, with a doctorate at the Research Laboratory Children's Hospital. Her university period was characterized by several training stays in the United States, Italy and Ticino, where she finally moved in 2004 to continue her post-graduate professional training at the Italian Hospital in Lugano. She then completed her specialization at the Inselspital in Bern from 2007 - 2009 and obtained the title of FMH and FEBO (European Board of Ophthalmology) in Paris, to return as Head of Clinic in charge of the Ophthalmology department at the OIL for a further 6 years.

Since 2015 she has been active in the private outpatient sector in Lugano (initially MV SA Ophthalmology Practice and since 2022 with Oftacentro), and at the Bellinzona Ophthalmology Centre.

Dr. med. Elena Catalano

Specialist in ophthalmology and ophthalmic surgery,  FMH

 

Dr. Catalano is a specialist in oculoplastic surgery of the eyelids, orbit and tear ducts.

She studied medicine at the University of Zurich, where she passed the state examination in 1994. Following her residency in Bellinzona and St. Gallen and after completing her ophthalmology training in St. Gallen, she expanded her knowledge of standardized ultrasound of the eye and orbit during a fellowship in Vienna, Austria. Thanks to a rotation in Amsterdam, she was able to specialize in plastic surgery of the eyelids and in the treatment of orbital pathologies. At St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital, she has held various senior positions in the ophthalmoplastic and general ophthalmology departments since 2004.
Since 2013, she has been a consulting physician in charge of the department of ocular orbit and adnexae of the eye clinic at St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital.

Dr. Catalano has been a member of the Oculoplastic Commission of the Swiss Ophthalmological Society since its foundation.
